Usce Park – Family Time along the Belgrade Rivers

The New Belgrade’s largest park is located very close to the Sava-Danube confluence, which was the inevitable inspiration for its name. This part of the city is uninhabited and covered with landscaped greenery, which makes it suitable for recreational activities, as well as for various cultural events. The most famous sites are the Eternal Fire monument and the Museum of Contemporary Art, which was reconstructed in 2017.

 

Given the long promenades and bicycle tracks, the park is often used by recreationalists and cyclists, who favor the proximity of Zemun Quay. Large green areas are under trees planted by world statesmen and celebrities from the world of art and culture. Therefore, this part of the estuary is known as Friendship Park. There are about 200 sycamore trees here, each of which bears a planter’s plaque as a symbol of peace.

 

Usce Park stretches from Branko’s Bridge to Hotel Yugoslavia, on an area of ​​80 hectares. At front end of the park, we find the first professional skateboarding ramp in Belgrade and Serbia. Until recently, the fact that the park is located in the wider center of Belgrade did not invite any greater involvement by the city managers. Strategic planning for the park began only in 2017, in cooperation with the Danish architect Jan Gehl.

 

Seven theme park zones have been created or are being prepared. The Movement Zone is a space for recreation and sports, employing running tracks, gyms and bike paths. Visitors will be able to rent bicycles, scooters, etc. The Nature Zone is designed as an exhibition space for tree replicas and animal sculptures. The Serbia Zone is dedicated to the country’s authentic culture and nature. Besides the Palace of Serbia (ex-Yugoslav government), which is included in the concept, there will be a small park with autochthonous species from Serbia, as well as details and cultural specificities of our country.

 

The Music Zone is designed primarily as a concert space. The concept relies on the existing practice of organizing music events such as large festivals. Many stars of the world music scene have performed in recent decades at this very location. Metallica, Robbie Williams, Madonna, Rihanna, Rolling Stones and Depeche Mode are just some of the names whose performances were available to Belgraders. In the festival category, Beer Fest is surely the most significant local event.

 

The Water Zone is dedicated to watercourses and the confluence of two rivers. There are plans to divert the water toward the park and form a small lake. Other envisioned sites include a large mast and a Ferris wheel, similar to the one on the River Thames. The Art Zone is located near the Museum of Contemporary Art and connected to the existing open-air gallery; a series of sculptures symbolizing modern architecture and nature is exhibited here. The Science Zone is filled with educational props and attractive exhibits that popularize science.

 

Before these ideas come to fruition, we can certainly enjoy the panoramic view of Kalemegdan and the historic part of Belgrade. The nearby Old Fairground is somewhat neglected, but is also included in the reconstruction and conversion plans. The new Belgrade Philharmonic, which has been publically announced, will add a special dimension to the whole area. The Usce shopping center, with its surrounding greenery and tree-lined streets, has been a favorite meeting place for years.

 

In addition to walking, kid’s entertainment and shopping, you should not miss the opportunity to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art. The importance of this institution is almost equal to the strategic position of the entire park. While the area is developing into a first-class metropolitan quarter, any time is good for recreation or a family outing.
