New Beginning: The Main Bus Station has moved to New Belgrade

The old Belgrade bus station (BAS), active since March 1966, ceased operations on September 27, 2024, when a brand new station was opened in New Belgrade. The exact location is 46-48 Antifasisticke Borbe Street, i.e. plot of 9.2 hectares in Block 42. Although officially opened, the main station facility is not yet complete. Currently, a temporary administrative building is in use, while the new one is expected by 2027.

The new main bus station is located near the New Belgrade railway station. It has 65 platforms (12 inbound, 53 outbound), a parking lot with 186 spaces and a taxi rank for 25 vehicles. Given the official announcements, the new station building will house a post office, bank and exchange office, as well as restaurants, cafes, special waiting room for mothers with children and a lounge space. A medical clinic is also planned, as well as lockers for storing luggage.

Following established practice, the station will have non-stop working hours. One of the new features is the retraction of tokens that were used to enter the platforms. From now on, entry will be enabled by QR code printed on each ticket. Tickets can be purchased directly at the station counters, in the Basturist office (domestic traffic) and online. When buying tickets online, the user is obliged to send the proof of payment by e-mail to BAS office, no later than 24 hours after receiving the payment instructions.

The station can be reached by public transport lines, namely trams 7, 9, 11 and 13, buses 85, 89, 94, 95, 600, E6, also 60, 60l, 67, 93 and the EKO1 line. Passengers will be able to reach the station by BG train as well. A new stop “South” is being built near Autokomanda roundabout to serve passengers arriving from the south of Serbia. The facility should be completed by the end of 2024.

The architectural and urban competition for the new station was announced back in 2014. The first place was won by the project bureau Proaspekt, led by architects prof. Milan and Vladimir Lojanica. The project envisaged a modern, functional and commercial solution for the traffic hub in New Belgrade. One of the main goals was the landscaping and connection of the bus and railway stations.

Announced back in 2017, the construction of the new station was repeatedly suspended due to lack of funds. According to the city authorities, the total value of the investment was 17 million euros. There are still conflicting opinions about moving the main bus station away from the city center. The official reason is the relief of downtown traffic, however, critical voices claim that the real reason is the expansion of Belgrade Waterfront.

The new station site implies the proximity of many important roads, such as Jurija Gagarina and Milentija Popovica streets, also the E-75 highway, the Gazela Bridge and the Ada Bridge. One more benefit is the proximity of the settlements of Belville, Sakura, Savada and A Blok, which opens up numerous accommodation and catering arrangements. You can easily reach the new residential and business blocks West 65, Wellport and Airport City along Omladinskih Brigada Street.

The closest places for shopping are the Delta City mega mall and Super Vero market which is located in the neighboring Milutina Milankovica Boulevard, along with MediGroup private clinic and several popular restaurants. Štark Arena and Sava Center are a few stops by city transport, which is a favorable circumstance when visiting major sports or cultural events. It will take time for the citizens and guests of Belgrade to get used to the new location of BAS, but it is already evident that the urban topography has fundamentally changed.
