Lipovica Forest – A Hidden Gem on the Picnic Map of Belgrade

Lipovička šuma, mesto za odmor i relaksaciju.

Situated in the north of Sumadija region, the Lipovica Forest extends along the Ibar highway, about 25 kilometers southwest of Belgrade. The forest itself occupies an area of 1.245 hectares, spreading over an undulating terrain with a height of 160 to 290 meters. This is the largest forest complex in the area. There is a stream flowing through the forest, creating a mini canyon; the source of the Topcider River is also located on the territory of Lipovica.

The history of these parts goes back to the time of the First Serbian Uprising, when the military leader Karadjordje, together with Simo Markovic, Janko Katic and other leaders of the rebellion, prepared the Belgrade siege. Throughout this tumultuous period, many insurgents found refuge in the forest. During the First and Second World Wars, Lipovica was the scene of battles with the Austro-Hungarian and German armies. Since the occupiers cut and destroyed the trees, the forest vegetation remained relatively young.

As for the wildlife species, there was a population of wolves and roe deer at the time. Old roads connecting Belgrade with southern and southeastern Serbia passed through Lipovica. One of them was the Rudnik road, whose branches connected Sumadija with Srem via Ostruznica. To this day, Lipovica remains a major intersection on the Ibar highway, with detours to Kosmaj and Arandjelovac.

After the Second World War, the forest became a hunting estate whose main activity was the development of local tourism. The Chemical Center of the Yugoslav Army was also located in the forest, and used as a fuel storage facility. The center was a regular target of the NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999. The explosions and subsequent fires caused extensive damage to the forest, which burned in a wide diameter around the storage.

Lipovica is home to cherry, ash, juniper, elm and acacia trees, as well as various shrubs. Slopes and narrow valleys are mostly populated by oak. Although deciduous species dominate, more conifers have been planted recently, which has made the landscape even more attractive and beautiful. This is why Lipovica was declared one of the most beautiful picnic spots around the city.

Another curious feature is the farm of thoroughbred horses located within the Srbijasume state property. The hunting grounds abound with a variety of game, including roe deer, pheasants, rabbits, foxes, partridges, etc. An exclusive pheasant farm was established in Lipovica, where these birds are bred for other hunting estates. The position of the forest is extraordinary, as it offers a spectacular view of Belgrade, Sumadija Mountains, Srem and Fruska Gora.

As a picnic and recreation spot, the forest is underutilized, although there are great conditions to do so. Many parts of the forest have been cleared, new trees planted and wide trails paved. After a long period of neglect, benches, garbage cans and other picnic props were installed. Additional improvements to the trails, infrastructure and catering facilities are expected, after which Lipovica could easily compete with Avala, Kosmaj and other well-known picnic areas.

Motels, pubs and restaurants are mostly distributed along the Ibar highway and the adjoining roads, which makes Lipovica perfect for an extended stay and walks in the preserved nature. The forest is on its way to regain the status from the 1980s, when the Belgraders built hundreds of summer cottages here. Apart from typical weekenders, the forest was visited by recreational athletes and other citizens who needed a break from their daily routines. The forestry care was at a high level of protection and ecological standards.

Lipovica is once again growing into a desirable picnic destination, although it needs much more ambitious undertakings to reestablish itself on the tourist map of Belgrade and its surroundings. Maybe this ‘intermediate phase’ is a good opportunity for a family expedition, before the whole area becomes too urbanized.
